The great driver for using the Amazon Associates web service to power my affiliate links was always to ensure I picked up the latest products from Amazon.
With a family and full-time job I don’t have the time to go back and review old posts and manually updating links, I wanted a way to always show the latest products with the latest prices.
The Simple Amazon Units plugin allows me to very quickly add products from the Amazon catalog into my WordPress posts and it will ensure they are always up to date!
The Amazon Product Advertising Web Service
Amazon’s own widgets are a great alternative to this plugin, however as discussed elsewhere on the site they didn’t provide the level of control I required.
But this is exactly why Amazon have created the Product Advertising API, it allows developers to get exactly the right information they require in the format they want it. The plugin sends requests for information to the web service and it kindly sends a response containing the information asked for.
This allows me to:
- Get links to product graphics for use in blog posts
- Request the most popular relevant products relating to the keywords entered
- Get up to date pricing information direct from Amazon
- Automatically update products that are no longer sold
Without this kind of technology you would have to manually update post after post forever more, or most likely your site would show out of date or irrelevant information – potentially costing you sales and hard-earned commissions.

Auto Updating Example
Here’s a quick example for you. I might want to list the latest albums of a particular artist alongside a post. If I want sales to stay strong I’ll want the old ones to be updated with the new best sellers.
I could use the plugin to produce something like:
And I won’t need to worry about coming back and updating the post every 6 months.
