How to Use WordPress Category Pages

Published on Jun 13th, 2010Filed Under: Wordpress Leave a Comment

I think a nice improvement to the Thesis them, or WordPress in general would be to allow the ability to customise how the category page looks, in particular it would be nice to put some text at the top of the category.

This would:

  • Improve user experience by letting us put something useful here to introduce the category
  • Allow us to create a more interesting page for the search engines to look at.  Rather than just a load of headlines from other posts there would actually be something worth indexing.

Enhanced Category Pages

For example, on SammyNetbook.com I have used categories to build pages up for each model, for example the Samsung NC10.  Before this I used to maintain a specific page for each model, which of course required constant updates, but now relevant content automatically attaches itself to the page and I don’t have to do anything else but post.

However, each of these “hubs” needed to have some background to introduce the model and let readers know what it’s all about and then I wanted to have some Amazon links right there to ensure there was a chance to gain some affiliate commission where possible.

Adding this content wasn’t difficult thanks to the Thesis frame work used on the site, but it still required some extra coding.  In my next post I’ll share the secrets to creating these customised category pages.
