So I saw a US based site that was tracking trends and seeing if there were any free domain names based on those keywords. This seemed like a good idea on the surface so I was interested to see if I could track UK trends and see if the keywords gave me any inspiration for good domain registrations. The US sites seemed to focus on .com domains but in the UK we are probably interested in .co.uk domains, and I’m also interested in org.uk domains as these are relatively unexploited.
Note that I am not suggesting you go out and register any of these domains, 90% of them are trademarks or celebrity names and I wouldn’t waste my time with these and potentially could get you into trouble if someone else has a legitimate claim. This list is really here to serve as inspiration and to pick out topics that may become big news in the future.
Is it useful?
To date I have not registered anything from the list myself, however it has spawned 3 domain ideas that look very promising through the Google Adwords keyword data. I always look for a high search volume (10k or greater) and a decent CPC, about a £1. Unfortunately the list is mostly made up of American terms, names or trademarks which are of no use to legitimate Internet entrepreneurs. Not as useful as I hoped – but still quite interesting!
I have linked this up to the Google Adwords API which accepts keywords and produces a load more. Unfortunately the API isn’t free so this functionality isn’t public, however I might look at allowing a limited number of calls or if this page proves popular and people start linking to it and my other sites then I will definitely see how I can improve it and maintain some momentum!
And if you:
- Know any sites with RSS feeds of trends
- Have any ideas for improvement
Then let me know!
