A recent post from Matt Cutts (a Google employee and blogger) has gone some way to explode a common myth that I often see SEO “experts” talk about. PageRank Sculpting. Read the article here.
There are two take home points here:
- You can’t sculpt PageRank using nofollow. In fact they recommend you don’t try to sculpt PageRank at all. This seems good advice to me, it has always been my view to aim for usability.
- Despite all the attention that SEO receives, Matt says that no one noticed that Google had changed this about a year ago! Just goes to show, what do the “SEO experts” really know?!
Google Info
Google do actually post information about how their search engine works, if you follow their blogs you can pick up all you really need to know. The other advantage of following their “best practice” approach is that you reduce your risk of getting penalised in the rankings – and no one wants that!
